Identify the location of the rust
Bathroom cabinet panels are typically made of solid wood veneer, resin, or lacquer, materials that do not easily rust themselves. Most rust appears on hardware accessories-such as hinges, drawer slides, and handles-or as surface stains caused by standing water on the countertop.
Rust removal methods based on severity
Light surface rust
White vinegar/citric acid method: Soak a cotton pad in white vinegar or a 5% citric acid solution and apply it to the rusted area for 10 minutes. Then, simply wipe it clean with a soft cloth; this method is gentle and won't damage the surface.
Toothpaste method: Squeeze toothpaste onto the rust and scrub in a circular motion using a scouring pad. The fluoride in toothpaste neutralizes oxides, providing both cleaning and mild anti-oxidation effects.
Moderate rust spots
Baking soda paste method: Mix baking soda with water to form a paste. Dip a sponge into the mixture and scrub the rust spots in a circular motion. Afterward, wipe away any residue with a damp cloth.
WD-40 method:Spray a specialized rust remover like WD-40 onto the rusted area. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then lightly scrub with a soft wire brush to quickly dissolve moderate rust.
Stubborn rust
Professional rust remover method:Use a rust remover specifically designed for stainless steel or a bathroom rust removal paste. Apply a thick layer over the rust, let it sit for 10–15 minutes, lightly scrub with a nylon brush, and rinse thoroughly. Remember to wear gloves during this process.
Physical sanding method: Metal parts like drawer slides can be removed; gently sand away rust spots and oxidized layers with sandpaper. After cleaning, apply lubricant to restore smooth operation. Note: Sanding is not recommended for plated hardware (like hinges), as it can wear off the protective anti-rust coating.
